Song Review: 'Kathleen' by Catfish and the Bottlemen

When a track makes you hit the repeat button instantly in your iTunes library, you know it’s going to be a big one. Today, Catfish and the Bottlemen are at it again with the release of the new single ‘Kathleen’.

The four-piece rock band hailing from Wales have been recently been receiving a plethora of attention and ‘Kathleen’ demonstrates exactly why. Opening with punchy percussion and moaning guitars which is then joined by a prominent bassline, the track embodies a playful post-punk indie-rock sound. The vocals of front man Van McCan deliver sombre lyrics ‘I’ve got to give it to you / you give me problems / when you are not in the mood’ with an underlying drone, yet there’s an electrifying rawness. It’s a short track of only 2:41 but with all the attention ‘Kathleen’ is receiving across the music industry, Catfish and the Bottlemen are ones to watch in 2014.
