The Crop Top Trend

Crop tops have experienced a major revival recently, appearing everywhere from the red carpet to the lecture theatre. Our writer, Ashley Chan, takes a looks at this new cropped trend and how to wear it…
It’s that time of year again when our pale legs must emerge from their nylon sheaths, and the summer ritual of fake tanning, shaving, and getting those tootsies sandal-ready begins. This year, however, you might just have one more thing to add onto the list of summer preparation: a slender waistline. It comes as no surprise as the bikini season is approaching, but it’s also a must so that you’re prepared to embrace this ever-growing summer trend: the crop top.

It’s needless to say that the crop top has officially taken over the world (at least the fashion world), with celebrities like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift all rocking this trend. Even though the crop top is not new to the fashion industry, its popularity has undoubtedly reached new heights. From the catwalk to the high street, they are being showcased in numerous different cuts, textures and patterns.
If you think that the crop top is just the same as any other, but haphazardly hemmed above the waistline, you might have underestimated the importance of these 2 tiny inches. In fact, they subtly emphasize one of the sexiest parts of a woman’s body and, most importantly, allow the skin to breathe in boiling summer weather - sexy and practical.
This new trend is also the perfect investment for the holiday season simply because crop tops go with everything. Seriously. For a casual day wandering around the city, throw on a grey, slouchy crop top and pair with your trusty old denim shorts. Tie a tartan shirt around your waist in case you feel a bit chilly, and finish off with a pair of white converse and a black leather baseball cap (just to amp up the varsity trend).

Looking for an outfit to wear with your girlfriends? Get inspiration from Anne Hathaway’s style on the red carpet in Miami Beach for her new movie premiere ‘Rio 2’. She blew everyone away with a crisp, white crop top, a cobalt blue midi skirt and some pointed heels. Elegant, sexy and fun - it checked all the boxes.
Whether you’re dressing down for a chilled-out day or getting glammed up for a night out, a crop top is the way to go. Team with something high-waisted so you keep the look classy and aren’t flashing your belly-button for all the world to see (unless you’re going for the Shakira look) and the crop-top will not let you down.
